Bashar Murkus et Khulood Basel revisitent un récit transmis oralement depuis le 14e siècle, chanté et joué dans toute la Péninsule arabique par d'innombrables poètes populaires. L'épopée légendaire des Banu Hilal — souvent décrite comme l'Iliade arabe — prend vie grâce à sept interprètes exubérants et humoristes qui se demandent aussi, sans nostalgie, ce que le théâtre arabe aurait pu devenir sans l'influence coloniale.
Le spectacle suit la vie extraordinaire d'Abū Zayd al-Hilālī, un enfant exilé dans son enfance en raison de sa couleur de peau, qui s'élève au fil des siècles du statut de réfugié déplacé à celui de figure mythique. La cérémonie mêle musique live, marionnettes et chorégraphie de danse Dabke.
