Hike to the Hermitage of Notre-Dame de Belle Grâce.

trail

The hike to the Hermitage of Notre-Dame de Belle Grâce begins in the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, in the Hérault countryside near Montpellier, and climbs steadily into the rugged landscape above it. It is an out-and-back route, so walkers retrace their steps to the village once they reach the hermitage.

The trail is about 8 kilometres in total, with roughly 430 metres of ascent, so it is best suited to people comfortable with sustained climbing over uneven ground. Wear proper walking shoes and carry water, especially in warmer months, when the exposed slopes can feel very hot.

What to expect on the way

As you climb, the village gradually shrinks below you. Each bend opens wider views over its rooftops, the abbey and the surrounding gorges, and the scenery changes from the stone houses of the valley to the open, rocky terrain of the hills. The views are the main reward of the walk, and many people stop several times simply to look back.

The route is a good choice for anyone who enjoys landscape walking and wants a day outdoors that is not too remote. Because the trail starts from a village, it is easy to combine the hike with time spent exploring Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert before or after you walk.

The hermitage

The destination is the Hermitage of Notre-Dame de Belle Grâce, a quiet place set high above the village. Its surroundings feel calm and removed from everyday traffic, and visitors often describe the atmosphere as peaceful and reflective. Whether you visit for the walk, the views or the stillness of the place, the hermitage gives the climb a clear purpose.

If you plan to go, allow a good part of the day, set off with time to spare, and be prepared for the return descent, which can be tiring on the knees and feet. Take your time, enjoy the views, and respect the quiet of the site.
