The ascent of Pic Saint-Loup from the village of Cazevieille is a classic walk in the Languedoc, set a short way north of Montpellier. The route starts in Cazevieille and climbs through Mediterranean scrubland and rocky ground to the summit of the Pic, a limestone peak that rises clearly above the surrounding countryside.
The trail is an out-and-back route of about 5.5 kilometres, with roughly 350 metres of ascent and the same again on the way down. The climb is steady rather than steep for its whole length, so it suits walkers who are comfortable on uneven, stony paths and who are happy to spend most of a morning or afternoon on the hill.
What you pass on the way
The path leads through garrigue, the low, aromatic scrub typical of this part of southern France. Expect rock underfoot and a landscape that changes as you gain height. The scrub is open enough that the views begin to open up well before the top.
- Mediterranean scrubland and wild herbs along the lower slopes
- Rocky terrain and exposed limestone as the path climbs
- Wide views from the summit over the garrigue and vineyards
At the summit
The reward for the climb is the view. From the top, the land falls away in every direction: the garrigue, the vineyards of the surrounding wine country, and distant horizons that give a sense of the wider Languedoc. It is a good place to stop, rest and look around before retracing your steps.
This is a walk for lovers of nature and landscape. It is best enjoyed in clear weather, with sturdy footwear and water carried for the climb, since the route is exposed and there is little shade on the way up. Because it is a return route, plan your timing so that you have enough daylight to come back down comfortably.
