trail

The Courtinals trail is a walking route in the Montpellier area of southern France, set among the pale rock formations of the Cirque de Mourèze. It is a loop, so you return to where you began without retracing your steps.

The walk takes you through the dolomite landscape of the cirque, where limestone pillars and sculpted stone figures rise from the ground in forms that seem to have been shaped by patient hands. The scenery changes as you move between the formations, and the variety of shapes makes the route feel more like an open-air gallery than a simple path through rock.

What to expect

The loop covers about 2.5 kilometres, a distance that suits a relaxed walk rather than a demanding hike. The trail is listed with an estimated duration of around 90 minutes, which allows time to stop often, look closely at the stone and take photographs. Many visitors find the views and the textures of the rock the highlight of the outing.

Because the route is on uneven ground among rock formations, sensible footwear is worth wearing. The landscape is open to the sun in many places, so bringing water and sun protection is a good idea on a warm day.

Is it worth the trip?

If you are interested in unusual geology or in landscapes that differ from the usual coastal and vineyard scenes of the region, the Courtinals trail offers a short and distinctive visit. It works well as part of a day spent exploring the area around Montpellier, and it suits photographers, families with older children and anyone who enjoys a gentle walk with a striking outlook.
