Anouar Brahem is een Tunesische oud-virtuoos die wordt geprezen om zijn vermogen om duizenden jaren oude Arabische muzikale tradities met Westerse en jazzinvloeden te verbinden. Zijn spel wordt gekenmerkt door ingetogen, nostalgische melodische lijnen die tegelijkertijd de herinnering aan oude tradities eren en de vrijheid van improvisatie omarmen.
Het programma, getiteld 'After the Last Sky', ontleent zijn naam aan een versregel van de Palestijnse dichter Mahmoud Darwish met de vraag 'Waar vliegen vogels heen na de laatste hemel?' De muziek bestaat uit delicate kamermuziekstukken voor oud, cello, piano en contrabas die deze metafysische vraag en haar resonanties in moeilijke tijden verkennen.
Hoewel geworteld in de traditionele modi van de Arabische muziek, heeft Brahem consequent gezocht naar dialoog met de bredere wereld, waarbij hij inspiratie putte uit veel verschillende culturen. Het internationale kwartet bestaat uit contrabasist Mats Eilertsen en pianist Django Bates, op dit project vergezeld door cellist Anja Lechner.
Het concert vindt plaats in de Amphi d'O in Montpellier op vrijdag 11 september 2026 om 21:30, als onderdeel van het Festival Arabesques.
