Théâtre Jean-Claude Carrière is a modern theatre in Montpellier, France, set on the grounds of the Domaine d'O in the north of the estate. Named after the French screenwriter and playwright Jean-Claude Carrière, it is one of the main venues for the Montpellier Hérault Opéra and hosts a range of theatre and performing arts productions.
The building
The theatre has been run by Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole since 1 January 2018. Its construction uses recyclable materials, including PEFC-certified wood, and it is fitted with insulation and LED lighting to save energy. Inside, the seating is retractable and the stage frame is modular, so the space can be arranged to suit different productions. The hall holds between 600 and 1,200 seats, depending on the layout.
Around the theatre
The theatre forms part of the Cité européenne du théâtre – Domaine d'O, which also includes an 1,800-seat amphitheatre, a restaurant and a 3-hectare pine grove. A visit can therefore combine a performance with time outdoors among the trees, before or after the show.
Getting there is straightforward by public transport: the tram line 1 stops at Malbosc, a short walk from the estate.
For the current programme, opening times and tickets, the theatre has its own website at domainedo.fr, and visitors can also call 04 67 63 66 81.
