Superkilen is an urban park in Nørrebro, one of Copenhagen's most diverse districts. It is a place where the city's varied communities meet, and it makes a lively stop for anyone curious about how Copenhagen looks and feels beyond its historic centre.
What you will see
The park is laid out in three colour-coded zones: red, black and green. Each zone is filled with everyday objects brought from more than 60 countries, including neon signs, benches and play equipment. Together they show how items from different cultures sit side by side in the same public space.
- The red zone is a square for social life and events, with bold colour and an open feel.
- The black zone offers a more urban, paved setting, shaped for sitting and passing through.
- The green zone is the most open of the three, a space for relaxing and play.
Who designed it
Superkilen was designed by the architecture firm BIG, the landscape practice Topotek1 and the art collective Superflex. Their collaboration gives the park its mix of architecture, landscape and art, and its emphasis on the idea of multiculturalism.
Making the visit
Superkilen works well as a stroll between other parts of Nørrebro, and it suits a relaxed visit of an hour or so, longer if you want to sit and watch the neighbourhood go by. Because it is a working public park used daily by local residents, it is best approached as a place to take in at your own pace, looking closely at the objects and the people who use them.
